For the past year, I have been a contributing writer for MLTnews.com, a community news website. When we have stories that overlap, MLTnews.com will frequently ask to run our content on its site. Here are some examples of that work.

“Rep. Rick Larsen gets firsthand look at the Mountlake Terrace HS STEM program”

Larsen-1-650x487

MTHS FIRST Robotics team members show off their robots to Rep. Rick Larsen during his tour of the STEM program at Mountlake Terrace High School on May 15.

This story appeared in both theHawkeye.org and MLTnews.com. Congressman Rick Larsen toured our school’s STEM program. I coordinated directly with the Teresa Wippel, the publisher of MLTnews.com, to plan coverage of this event. We have had great success in collaborating with our two publications.

I worked with Rep. Larsen’s Communications Director to arrange an interview with Rep. Larsen following his tour of the STEM program.

“Backpacks for Little Hawks packed and ready to go”

This story highlighted the efforts of several community members to make school supplies ready for low-income students in the area. It just so happened to be that I was there to pick up my mom from the event, but I saw its newsworthiness and quickly contacted the publisher to see if it was something she wanted covered. She said yes and I got to work covering the event.

“2013 MTHS grad an eyewitness to SPU violence”

This story ran in both theHawkeye.org and MLTnews.com. After a gunman opened fire at Seattle Pacific University, I contacted a former student who attended SPU at the time. As it turned out, she was an eyewitness to the violence. I worked with the MLTnews.com publisher to produce this story. I gained valuable experience in reporting on crime, using sensitivity with people who have undergone traumatic experiences and taking extra care to make sure stories about crimes and death are ethically and legally sound.
