“The devastating impact of prescription drug abuse hits home” – May 2014

This story followed the killing of a former student over a fight about prescription drug use. After covering the news story, I wanted to take a look at the broader issue of prescription drugs and its impact on society. This story won “Honorable Mention” for the 2014 National Scholastic Press Association News Story of the Year.

“Making a brighter future for both her and her family” – Nov. 2012

This story was about a student and her family who immigrated to the United States from Thailand. I was captivated by this student’s incredible work ethic. She has dedicated herself to her studies, her family and her future. I loved telling this story because I was able to give a voice to a student who was fairly voiceless. People understood there was more to her than just the quiet girl they knew.

“Dynamically Derr” – Feb. 2015

Of all the stories I have written, this story about an English teacher who was formerly an aide to Jimmy Carter and a top political operative, is my favorite. I love this story because I was able to share the unknown story of an incredible and influential woman. It was wonderful to see students’ reactions to reading this story.

“Do you believe in magic?” – Oct. 2013

I had a great time writing this story. Tom Boland is a well-known substitute teacher who is famous for showing magic tricks at the end of class. In this story, I explore the path the took to become the “Magic Man.”

“The pot problem” – April 2013

After marijuana was legalized in Washington state, there were a great number of questions surrounding the potential sale and use of marijuana in the area. I used a number of sources in compiling this story, as many different officials have different takes on the new law and what it means.

“Kayla Wheeler: Nothing she can’t do” – June 2013

This story is a profile on an amazing student athlete who is a world class Paralympic swimmer despite all odds. I am proud of this story because it highlights amazing accomplishments that widely go unseen at school. This story won an “Honorable Mention” for the 2014 National Scholastic Press Association Multimedia Feature Story of the Year.
